Time – allow 45 minutes
Distance – 3.5 km/2.25 miles
The route is well marked on informal grass paths crossing fields, with two short sections on a quiet public road. There are short and fairly gentle ascents to the two hilltops.
Route: Start/finish – Newlands Kirk, on B7059 near Romanno Bridge
Park in the car parking area opposite Newlands Kirk , on the B7059 road to Peebles 1.5 km south of the A701 at Romanno Bridge.
Turn right from the car park and walk along the road then over the bridge, tuning right on the other side of the bridge through a gate into a field, following the signpost (to ‘Mountain Cross via Bordlands Fort’). Waymarkers lead you round the edge of the field and then up to the line of trees , bearing left along the fence-line to follow the trees uphill.
At the crest of the hill, you will see, in among the trees to your right, the earthworks of the Bordlands hill fort .
Continue following the waymarkers, descending to a gate leading onto a tarmac road .
Once through the gate, turn right and walk 100m down the road. You will reach a gate on your left into a field signposted ‘Henderland Hill Fort’ . Head uphill along the line of a stone wall to your right, passing through a stand of trees onto the hilltop, where the impressive earthworks of Henderland Fort are clearly visible . The views from here are very fine indeed in every direction and well worth the short stroll.
To return, either retrace your steps (recommended) or, instead of turning left into the field to head back up to Bordlands Fort, continue along the road past the houses at Callands and down to the junction with the B7059. Turn left and walk back along the road to Newlands Kirk, visible ahead of you.
