Initially a gentle stroll from the village along the stretch of the Lyne Water behind Broomlee camp, the middle section of the walk up Broomlee Hill will get the heart rate going a bit.

Route: Start/finish: West Linton village

Leave the village heading south via Station Road (B7059). After 1 km, just before Broomlee Camp, you come to a house on the right (‘Rycroft’)[2]. The route takes you along a track immediately to the right of the house and involves what amounts to walking into its driveway. Although this is a right of way, out of courtesy we have checked with the residents and they are happy for people to walk through so long as appropriate care is taken. 

Continue on into the woods. You will now have the Black Burn running alongside you to your right and the wooden buildings of the camp to your left visible through the trees. After 800m, you reach a bridge over the Lyne[3]. Cross the bridge and turn left down the bank[4] and over the fence to continue downstream along the Lyne’s right bank. After 250m, the water meanders left.

Continue ahead through the meadow then bear right and up the slope with a house down to your left. Pass through the bank of rhododendrons and turn left. Walk alongside the rhododendrons and pass through a gate onto a path, which quickly widens to become a vehicle track. After 500m, the track merges with an unmade road coming from the right as you approach Spitalhaugh House[5]. Continue ahead with the Lyne down to your left, crossing the water via a bridge, heading up to the B7059 at Kaimhouse.

Turn right[6] and walk along the B7059 for just a few metres before turning left onto a long, straight farm track. Head along for 600m before turning left off the track onto a footpath (signposted ‘West Linton via Broomlee Hill’). Follow the path along the edge of a wood then bear left uphill[7] towards a stand of trees. Pass to the right of these and bear left uphill again, aiming for a way-marker post. The radio mast on Broomlee Hill will come into view as you crest the hill.

Follow the Tweed Trails signs keeping to the edge of the field, passing through a gate and then turning left towards the mast, joining a farm track and dropping down the hill again past the mast, coming out on B7059. Turn right here[8] and walk back along the public road past Broomlee Camp and into West Linton
